Leveraging life experiences, coupled with invaluable guidance from friends, as well as platforms like YouTube and Google, Lexis acquired a substantial educational foundation. During the challenging times of the COVID pandemic, she seized the opportunity to enhance her knowledge by enrolling in free online courses provided by renowned institutions. Balancing responsibilities as a parent, Lexis dedicated her nights to learning, exploring diverse subjects, including coding, among others.
Below are highlights of the interview:
What motivated you to become a Founder & CEO, and how did you progress to your current position at LittleWins?
After one of my four children suffered a skull fracture during a C-section that resulted in cerebral palsy, I was desperate to learn as much as I possibly could as fast as possible and make every effort to ensure she had all the right care and necessary equipment. I immediately realized how difficult it was to find the needed information and got regularly scheduled therapy appointments. Even with insurance, it was hard to acquire the equipment she would need. My personal experience opened my eyes to a massive problem that I wasn’t aware of before. I became obsessed with trying to find a way that I could help other people who were experiencing the same thing. I interviewed as many families, caregivers, doctors, and therapists as I could who would talk to me about their experience and journey to acquiring care, equipment, and doctor appointments. I founded LittleWins as a marketplace rooted in the simple concept of sharing. If I have something I no longer need and you need it, chances are we also might have more in common than just that device or medical supply. Of all the interviews, I found that the common denominators were that every person had something they no longer needed, something they could not get, and everyone felt alone and isolated.
How would you describe your leadership style? What are the key principles or values that guide your leadership approach?
My leadership style is to lead by example. Not afraid to ask questions and dig deeper. I encourage my colleagues to do the same and make sure that I create an environment where they feel free to do just exactly that, as well as think outside the box and be creative, no matter what I try every single day. I believe that I’ve been very fortunate to be able to work with individuals who have the same mindset. We believe as a collective, and our values littlewins, guiding principles: integrity, doing the right thing, and being good stewards of the resources and relationships entrusted to us. Empowerment: We seek to empower our members by giving them access to tools and resources. They need to improve their lives. With compassion, we care about our members and their families and offer an environment and interactions free from judgment or expectations of collaboration. We believe that working together generates richer outcomes and that fostering community is the key to better results. Respect. We value and honor our differences, embracing the people and communities we serve. Accountability means we follow through on our commitments and take ownership of our results.
What strategies do you employ to ensure effective communication and collaboration within your organization?
We have a very small team here at LittleWins, and we all wear many hats. We have a chat portal and utilize work management solutions, we have a weekly team meeting, and we are in constant contact through our chat portal.
What is your vision for LittleWins’ future? How do you see the company evolving and adapting to industry changes?
My vision for a Littlewins future: technology is ever-changing and evolving. We have to stay agile and on top of those changes to ensure that our website is always up-to-date and provides the best user experience possible. I plan to continue to build upon the strong foundation I created years ago and expand it internationally. Currently, we are working on a transportation solution concept and joining forces with existing companies. I believe very strongly in teamwork and have found it to be the best, most efficient, and most inspiring way to work together to achieve our common goals.
Additionally, we launched our medical supply subscription boxes this month. I’ve worked on for 3 years with the help of our members. We’re about to kick off season 4 of the LittleWins podcast, which was in Spotify’s top 20 most shared podcasts globally last year.
As a CEO, how do you maintain a healthy work-life balance? What practices or activities do you engage in outside of work to recharge and rejuvenate?
I don’t consider my job work per se. I thoroughly enjoy what I get to do. It’s an honor and a pleasure that has never lost its charm on me. There’s no greater feeling than when you’ve been able to make a difference in someone else’s life. My kids are a huge part of LittleWins and are incredibly helpful, enjoying working on this project together. When I am trying out storyboards or mapping out a new update, I bring out a big piece of white paper and my markers, and I do it with me.
I wanted to create a children’s compression sock line because my daughter wanted more colorful ones. My kids drew out the designs; they’ve been working the booth with me at expos, etc. My work-life balance is largely because we do it together. I recently started coaching my son’s soccer team, which has been an absolute blast! I am halfway through getting my private pilot’s license and go to school three times a week. I love to garden and travel whenever I can. I get so inspired going to new places and experiencing new things. Many of the ideas I’ve had for Littlewins Littlewins are derived by putting myself in new places and simply observing.
What advice would you give to aspiring leaders who are looking to make a significant impact in their respective industries?
I honestly never thought anyone would ever ask me that question. I just believe in keeping your head down, doing the work, and trying your best every day. Don’t be afraid to ask. If you stay curious, do all of that, and don’t give up even when it gets hard, you will absolutely succeed. I’ll be rooting for you!
