Below are highlights of the interview:
What core values or principles guide your approach to leadership, particularly in the context of healthcare and patient recovery?
I believe my leadership style embodies Empathy, Compassion, Integrity, Empowerment, and Collaboration. I seek to create an environment where individuals feel understood, supported, and empowered. I uphold honesty, transparency, and ethical standards, fostering trust and credibility within the team. This combination has proven to successfully support individuals in their recovery while cultivating a positive and cohesive work culture among my staff.
How do you balance the dual priorities of delivering high-quality patient care and addressing the business needs of Fresh Start Recovery?
At Fresh Start Recovery, balancing client care with business needs entails several key elements: aligning goals, optimizing resource allocation, leveraging data for informed decisions, nurturing staff development, fostering community partnerships and, more importantly, relationships, all the while remaining open to change. However, I will indicate that our commitment to maintaining a humanistic approach to how we view our clients is non-negotiable. Our clients will never be reduced to mere numbers; they are at the core of all our business decisions, serving as the foundation of our ethos.
What strategies do you employ to foster a culture of continuous learning and professional growth among your team members?
We implement targeted strategies to cultivate a culture of continuous learning and professional growth. This includes providing regular training opportunities, fostering a highly collaborative approach to organizational development and skill-sharing, and leading by example. By empowering our team through these approaches, we cultivate a culture where ongoing learning and professional advancement opportunities are obtainable, valued and embraced throughout our organization.
How do you ensure that patient needs and preferences remain at the forefront of decision-making processes at Fresh Start Recovery?
We remain focused on ensuring our client’s needs and preferences guide our decisions. We understand and achieve this by adopting a variety of strategies: We wholeheartedly embrace the client-centred approach through the use of client Feedback Mechanisms, encouraging interdisciplinary collaboration, applying individualized care plans, maintaining transparent communication, prioritizing cultural competence, and continually reviewing and improving our programs through data analytics. By remaining true to these methods, we reaffirm our dedication to keeping our clients at the center of everything we do, leading to genuine client-centred care and fostering positive outcomes in their treatment journeys and our organizational culture.
In what ways do you collaborate with other healthcare professionals and stakeholders to optimize patient outcomes and overall operational effectiveness?
At the core of our organization, collaboration with partners and stakeholders is paramount. Our transparent and inclusive approach enables us to harness the strength of these relationships, optimizing client outcomes and operational effectiveness. This is evident in the collaborative events we attend and organize and can be seen in the platforms we develop, which bring together healthcare professionals to drive change collectively. A notable platform is the development of the Rocky Mountain Recovery initiative, which is just launching. We have united a great many service providers and partners to raise awareness and advocate for a unified voice in recovery efforts through community engagement and involvement.

How do you foster collaboration and communication among interdisciplinary teams to provide holistic care for patients?
For many years, our organization has been at the forefront of championing the interdisciplinary team approach. This method necessitates open communication and fosters a highly collaborative environment. We have embraced the recovery-oriented systems of care model for over a decade, underscoring our commitment to placing clients at the center of our approach. By bringing together various systems and services in a client-centric manner, we ensure the implementation of best practices and achieve optimal outcomes for the individuals we serve.
What are some of the most significant challenges you’ve encountered in your role, and how have you addressed them?
As a leader, my primary challenge lies in fostering diverse perspectives and individual autonomy within the team. This task is complicated by the fear of rejection and imposter syndrome experienced by some individuals throughout their professional journey. This has the propensity to lead to hurt feelings, lack of engagement and conflicts among staff. However, we strive to actively cultivate an encouraging, transparent, and contributing culture where we recognize the significance of every team member and value all ideas, regardless of their adoption. By promoting this mindset, we ensure that everyone feels valued and contributes to our collective success, irrespective of the outcome of their ideas. However, this is an ongoing challenge that rears its head in random occurrences with no discernible pattern. Our success is contingent on our unity, and that unity is only as strong as the weakest link. It is imperative that every member is supported and committed and feels the weight of each day is distributed amongst those around them. We all require support through all the seasons of one’s journey.
How do you stay updated on the latest trends, best practices, and advancements in healthcare management and patient care?
We stay current with the latest best practices and advancements in treatment management and client care through continuous learning strategies and professional development. Our staff are encouraged to pursue further education and relevant certifications in addiction treatment and client care with our support and investment. This ensures we remain updated with industry standards and advancements. Additionally, we prioritize collaboration and networking, actively engaging with other treatment centers, healthcare professionals, researchers, and industry experts to exchange knowledge, share experiences, and stay informed about emerging trends and approaches. Furthermore, we conduct regular program improvement initiatives to continuously evaluate and refine our treatment protocols, practices, and procedures based on evidence-based guidelines and feedback from clients, staff, and the community.
